Samuel R. Barrett
Samuel Rudolph Barrett of Dothan died Saturday, December 27, 2014. He was 92.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Allie Freeman officiating. Burial with Navy honors will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Monday evening at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wesley Manor, 718 Honeysuckle Road, Dothan, AL 36305.
Mr. Barrett was born in Dothan on May 13, 1922. He lived in Ashford before moving to Dothan in 1950. He entered the U.S. Navy during WWII and served on the USS Bunker Hill in the South Pacific. Following his discharge, he worked with his father in the plumbing and electrical business in Ashford. After moving to Dothan, Mr. Barrett was employed as building supervisor and later manager of the Houston Hotel, which became the Troy State Dothan facility. After retirement, he and his wife ran a daycare service out of their home.
Mr. Barrett was a longtime member of Dothan Lions Club and served in many offices in that organization. He enjoyed being at Compass Lake and was a founding member of the Dothan Boat Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and was active in Young at Heart.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Bludsworth Barrett and four sisters.
Survivors include his son, James Henry Norris, Jr. (Debbie); daughter, Pamela Barrett Hartman; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Larry Barrett (Betty) and Walter Barrett; and several nieces and nephews.
