Sandra Ludlum Hanahan, a resident of Dothan, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2018 at her daughter’s home surrounded by her family following an extended illness.


Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2018 at First United Methodist Church of Dothan with Dr. James B. Sanders III, Reverend Hunter Pugh and Chaplain Eddie Biss officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Kendall Glover directing. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday in the parlor of First United Methodist Church. At other times the family will be at the home of Bunk and Bronwyn Hanahan.


In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Dothan Education Foundation in her name, P O Box 1827, Dothan, Alabama 36302 or to Kindred Hospice, 2740 Headland Avenue, Dothan, AL, 36303.


Ms. Hanahan was born December 27, 1937 in Dothan, Alabama to Adris Eugene and Elizabeth Bell Ludlum. She was a 1956 graduate of Dothan High School and was Houston County’s Maid of Cotton in 1958.  She received her Bachelor’s  Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama and earned her certificate in Gifted Education from Troy University. Ms. Hanahan received the Exemplary Contribution to Education Award from the University of Alabama Capstone College. Ms. Hanahan touched many children’s lives during her teaching career. She retired from the Dothan City School System in 1998.


Ms. Hanahan was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority at the University of Alabama, a past member of the Dothan Service League and the coordinator of the Squirrel’s Club at the United Federal Bank. She was the first female realtor to receive a Broker License in Dothan. Ms. Hanahan was a member of the Christ the King Episcopal Church in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Her children and her grandchildren were the love of her life. She enjoyed photography, painting, and hand sewing. 


She is predeceased by her parents; an infant granddaughter, Margaret Elizabeth Glover; a brother, Ed Ludlum; two sisters, Jane Pender and Ann Ludlum.


She is survived by three children, Bunk Hanahan (Bronwyn),  Libba Hanahan Williams (Myron) and Caroline Hanahan Glover (Kendall), all of Dothan; a brother, Gene Ludlum of Dothan; a sister, Carolyn White of Dothan; eleven grandchildren, Elizabeth Hanahan, Ingraham Hanahan IV, Ludlum Hanahan, Brook Meadows III, Caroline Meadows, Bailey Meadows Summerford (Josh), Paul Williams, Falin Williams, Emma Glover, Doster Glover and Libba Ann Glover, all of Dothan; sisters-in-law, Nancy Ludlum, Hasell Hanahan Handrahan (Bob), Jean Hall (Gene) and Peggy Hanahan; brothers-in-law, Laurence Pender II and Jimmy Hanahan; several nieces and nephews.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Bunk Hanahan, Ingraham Hanahan, Ludlum Hanahan, Brook Meadows III, Myron Williams, Paul Williams, Josh Summerford, Kendall Glover and Doster Glover.


The family would like to express their appreciaton to the staff of Kindred Hospice, especially Tanya Champion, Karen Kelley, Darlene Brantley and Chaplain Eddie Biss. A special thank you also to her special caregivers, Mary Jones, Patsy Murray, Wendy Hunt, Keisha Reynolds, Jacqueline LaRoda and Talesha Belcher for their loving care of Ms. Hanahan.
