Jesus hugged Sara Hayes Brewer on May 26, 2023. She lived an abundant life serving Him as daughter, sister, friend, wife, teacher, Mom, and Nana.
Sara was the cherished, “oops” child of the late Ray and Audrey Hayes and was loved through her death by sisters Minna Appleby and Pug Grimes. She graced our community as a Blumberg window model, Dothan High cheerleader, and runner-up Miss Dothan beauty queen, giggling with her childhood bestie, Gail McGourik Bell, through the end. They both attended Howard University (presently known as Samford,) where she won Best Actress and Joe Brewer’s heart.
She became Sara Brewer in 1962 and moved to Satellite Beach, Florida by 1964. Together, Mr. and Mrs. Brewer changed the hearts of many teens as caring and enthusiastic educators of thirty-plus years. They also created and adored three daughters: The late, Kelly Brewer, Amanda Mather (Roderick) of Kingston, Rhode Island, and Emily Stewart (Blaine) of Dothan. She was a funny and forgiving mother to them and many of their friends.
Sara also managed to befriend the only other Dothan High graduate in the two-mile-long community of Satellite Beach, the late Ed Lowe. She and his late wife, Annette, were the best friends and spaghetti makers for forty-plus years, and her legacy lives on through their children, Shannon, Andy and David Lowe, and Casey Norris.
During her final thirty years, Sara was most proudly and better known as Nana. She shared her love for the beach and her knowledge from Snapple tops with grandchildren, Sara Mackenzie Crutchfield (Mason) and Tanner Stewart of Dothan, Jette Stewart of Panama City, Florida, and Emma, the late I.J., Ricky and Charlie Mather of Kingston, Rhode Island. (She was also elated to become great-grandmother to Sawyer and Cory Hayes Crutchfield of Dothan, from whom COVID couldn’t even keep her!)
After losing Joe in 2004, Nana made a gradual return to Dothan, permanently moving ‘home’ in 2012. She lived her final years as the fifth Stewart girl, attending many Northview volleyball games, family vacations, and worship services at Covenant and First Methodist. She was fully “dressed to the nines” at each, winning Miss Dothan in the minds of those who knew her.
She will be forever missed for being both gullible and intelligent, silly, and poised. Join us as we celebrate her epic life on Sunday, June 25th, at 2 pm in the Glover Funeral Home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Respite Care, a near and dear ministry for which she loved volunteering.
