A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 11:00 am in Sunset Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Bradley Rushing officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Landmark Park in her honor.








Sara M. Popp, a loving, faith-filled, and passionate woman, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2023, in Dothan, AL. Born on July 15, 1948, in Elamville, AL, Sara spent her life dedicated to her family, friends, and community.


Sara is survived by her devoted husband, John Popp, her loving son Chad (Amie) Helms, her cherished grandchildren, Carlie and Sam Helms, her brother, Eugene (Mildred) McLendon and several nieces and nephews. Her family was the center of her world, and she took great pride in their accomplishments and happiness.


Sara was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Morrell Dansby and Lois Irene Byrd Dansby; her siblings, Sybil (Billy) Adkinson, Oyed (Sarah) McLendon and Lanell (Jack) Teal.


Sara earned an Associate’s Degree from Riley Business College, which led her to a fulfilling career with the City of Dothan Transportation Department. Over her 29 years of service, Sara made a significant impact on her community, retiring in 2012. Her dedication and hard work were evident to all who knew her, and she was a respected and valued member of the community and a devoted member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.


A lifelong fan of Elvis Presley, Sara’s love for music was infectious. Her enthusiasm for Elvis was just one example of her zest for life and her ability to find joy in the simple things.


One of Sara’s favorite pastimes was spending time with her grandchildren, whether it be taking Sam fishing, getting Carlie’s nails done or visiting Landmark Park, where she would indulge in a candy and soda before taking a leisurely stroll through the picturesque grounds. She found solace in the beauty of nature and appreciated the tranquility it provided her. These moments of peace and reflection were important to Sara, and she cherished the time spent in the park.


Traveling and road trips were another passion for Sara, as she loved exploring new places and creating memories with her loved ones. Whether it was a weekend getaway or a cross-country adventure, Sara embraced the journey and the opportunity to learn and grow from her experiences.


Throughout her life, Sara was a beacon of love, faith, and compassion. She always put others first. Her unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and community was evident in all aspects of her life. She was a guiding light for those who knew her, offering support, encouragement, and wisdom at every turn.


Sara’s legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched and the memories she created with those who loved her. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends, as they remember her loving, faith-filled, and passionate nature.


As we celebrate Sara’s life and honor her memory, let us remember the joy she brought to those around her, the love she shared, and the impact she made on her community. Sara M. Popp will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
