SARA RUTH HOLMAN
HEADLAND. . .Sara Ruth Walden Holman, a resident of Headland, died Thursday morning, March 22, 2018, at her childhood home. She was 74.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 24, 2018, in the Worship Center of the First Baptist Church of Headland with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders, Jr. and Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in the Headland Methodist Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 A.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Zona Gayle Baxter Honor Tribute Scholarship Fund, c/o Penny Jones, 503 Mitchell Street, Headland, AL 36345.
Sara Ruth Holman was a lifelong resident of Headland, daughter of the late Joe Dave Walden and Sara Owens Walden. She was a 1961 graduate of Headland High School and attended the University of Alabama. Sara Ruth reared two sons and two granddaughters. She was selected Headland’s “Woman of the Year” in 1982 and served as Mayor of Headland from 1992 until 1996. Sara Ruth formerly served as a member of the Headland City Council, the Headland Water Board, the Headland Airport Authority, the Southeast Alabama Gas District Board, the Headland Athletic Association and was involved in many community activities through the years. Sara Ruth served as the President of Walden, Inc. She was a member of the Headland United Methodist Church and was a co-founder of Meadowbrook. Sara Ruth was preceded in death by her brother, Joe Owens Walden and the father of her sons, Norman D. Holman, Sr.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Norman “Dugg” Holman, Jr. (Susan), Owasso, OK; and David C. Holman, Headland; a sister-in-law, Ginger Morris (Jimmy), Headland; six grandchildren, Jenna Holman Mead, Craig Holman, Kathryn Holman, Michelle McRae, Takeera Monroe and Sabrina Holman; several great-grandchildren; aunts, Doris Owens and Mary Walden, special friends and caregivers, Gloria Campbell and Linda Watson; nieces and a nephew, Joey Walden, Jill Walden, Holly Burks (Brendon); several cousins including, Penny Jones, Gina Ensley, Sheila Lashley-Crumpler, Beth Shaw, Dianna Duncan, Ann Jackson, Julia Walden, Jimmy Walden and other great-nieces and great-nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Dennis Coe, Chase Jones, Craig Holman, Nick McRae, Justin Farr, and Jimmy Walden.
