SEABORN SMITH CARTER
COLUMBIA. . .Seaborn Smith Carter, a resident of Columbia, died early Thursday evening, September 6, 2012, at his home. He was 85.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, September 8, 2012, in the Columbia City Cemetery with Reverend Robert Strickland officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Columbia, P.O. Box 77, Columbia, AL. 36319.
Mr. Carter was a native of Haleburg and moved to Columbia with his family as a child. He was a 1944 graduate of Houston County High School. Mr. Carter enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1944 and served twenty and one half years before retiring in 1965 with the rank of Chief Quartermaster. He served his country in the Navy during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Mr. Carter returned to Columbia in 1968 where he lived the remainder of his lifetime. In later years, he retired from Great Southern Paper Company in Cedar Springs, GA after twenty years employment. Mr. Carter was a member of the Columbia Masonic Lodge No. 135. He was preceded in death by his father, Olice Cleveland Carter, Sr. and his mother, Helen Smith Carter, a sister, Sue Carter Espy, two brothers, Tom Carter and Olice Carter, Sr., a sister-in-law, Burma Hasty Carter and a niece, Nancy Carter.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Sue Carter Burton and husband, David, Greenwood, S.C.; a son, Larry W. Carter and wife, Sandra, Columbia; five grandchildren, Michael Carter, Kristy Carter, Patrick Carter, Hunter Burton and Zachary Burton; a brother, Bartlett Carter and wife, Rita, Cinnaminson, N.J.; nieces and nephews, Helen Bonner, Buddy, Helen Costa, Jeanie, Debbie and Bart, Jr.
Serving as active pallbearers will be members of the Columbia Masonic Lodge.
