SFC Alonzo Hunt, Jr., US Army, Retired, a resident of Newville, passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at his residence. He was 76 years old.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, August 21, 2021 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John Faulk officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10-11 am.
Mr. Hunt was born on November 15, 1944 in Vian, Oklahoma. He joined the US Army in July 1975 from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and spent over 23 years serving as an Attack Helicopter Repairer and Flight Operations Coordinator. He retired as a Sergeant First Class in October 1986 at Fort Rucker, Alabama. During his time in service, he served several tours in the Vietnam War that earned him the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Aircraft Crewmember Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Good Conduct Medal (7), Vietnam Service Award w/ 3 Bronze Stars, and an Army Achievement Medal. After his military retirement, he continued to work at Army Fleet Support (AFS) for 10 years as an Aircraft Mechanic.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Shirley Hunt; his 2 sons, Brian Hunt and Timothy (Haley) Hunt; his 8 daughters, Melody Murdock, Cheryl Ruiz, Angelica Kogutz, DeEddra (Eric) Fails, Carmen Hunt, Kesha Abrams, Crystal (Alan) Nichols, and Chanda (Harvey) Walker; his brother, Everett Hunt; his sister, Willa Jean Hunt; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
