“You know, she was a lady. And a lady always knows when to leave.”
– Fried Green Tomatoes
Sharon Cobb Duffie of Dothan, Alabama unexpectedly and quickly went to be with the Lord early Saturday morning, November 23, 2024. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2024, 12 p.m. at Fowler Family Funeral Home (965 Woodland Drive) with Pastor Fox Fleming and Chaplain John Gormley officiating. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m.
She is survived by her real-life Rhett Butler, Terry Duffie, husband of nearly
52 years; her children daughter, Ryanne Duffie Saucier (Dan Saucier), son,
Terry “Skip” Durrell Duffie, II (Scarlett Duffie), and Dr. Tara Roseann Duffie
Hawkins (Josh Hawkins); and her father Malcolm Cobb. She enjoyed
entertaining and loving her two beautiful grandsons Elias Saucier (Ryanne
and Dan) and Jack Duffie (Skip and Scarlett).
Born in Fairfield, Alabama on October 13, 1949, Sharon grew up loving the
arts, music, and dancing. She performed in one of the first local Mickey
Mouse Club Mouseketeer Clubs at the Birmingham Theater and was a
majorette. She was a graduate of Jacksonville State University and
received a Masters degree in Education from Troy State University.
“Ms. Sharon,” (and NOT Mrs. Duffie, as she was quick to tell you was her
mother-in-law, Mabel Duffie) was a wife, mother, writer, poet, educator, a
bibliophile, a lover of American history, incredible cook, an appreciator of
fine china, good Southern etiquette, Elvis, and a Christmas decoration
afficionado. With a memory like a steel trap (of course, unless she didn’t
want to remember), she was quick to debate anyone on the origins of and
the history behind a line in the United States Constitution or a passage
from the Bible.
Her love affair with Terry began with a meet cute, usually only reserved for
romantic comedy movies, of a chance meeting in the college cafeteria of
Jacksonville State University with him peacocking for any girls’ attention
and her in a white tennis skirt. It started with him declaring to the other
hormonal males at the table “I’m going to marry that one” and concluded
with a devotion to each other through all the ups and downs, building
businesses, building dreams, and building a family for over 52 years.
The backbone (and oftentimes brains behind) Terry’s dreams, aspirations,
and career accomplishments, Sharon knew that being a mother was her
highest and best calling. In addition to her God-given children, her home
was a place where friends of Ryanne, Skip, and Tara always felt welcomed,
loved, and usually greeted with cookies, chocolate milk, and advice,
whether they wanted it or not. And, if not wanted, they knew the advice
was rooted in love and genuine care for their well-being and growth as a
human. Her influence as a teacher impacted lives in ways that will never
be fully comprehended.
She enjoyed spending time in the Smoky Mountains where she felt most at
peace and with God. Recently, she could be found finding opportunities to
indulge and spoil her two grandsons rotten. Traveling with the families of
Elias and Jack had become a favorite, and delighting in seeing them grow,
learn, and explore this world. Always inquisitive and suspect, she never
quite believed Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, or John F. Kennedy, Jr. left this world
in the manner in which is the accepted story. She knew who she was and
whose she was.
She suffered no fool and had zero patience for not aspiring to do your best.
If she loved you, you damn well knew it. And, if she didn’t, well, you
probably knew that too. The quintessential Southern Belle who believed in
the good of humanity, loving people well, a nicely penned handwritten
thank you note, and celebrating with the perfect table setting for any
occasion, her presence here in this Earth will be missed every day.
She is preceded in death by her daughter Suzanne Duffie, mother Jewel
Maureen Cobb, her grandmother Dolly Roberts, her mother-in-law Mabel
Duffie, father-in-law Homer Duffie, and many beloved pets.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable donations to any of the following organizations:

A special thank you to Stephanie Burke who lovingly cared for, argued with, and assisted her for over six years. As they joked, Stephanie was an amazing Governess to the Queen.
