HEADLAND…Sheila Jackson (Jackie) Smothers, a resident of Headland, died early Wednesday morning, April 29, 2015, at her home. She was 86.


            Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 1, 2015, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Ricky Sowell officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Friday at the mortuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, Alabama 36303 or to the Blanche R. Solomon Memorial Library, 17 Park Street, Headland, Alabama 36345.


            Mrs. Smothers was born and reared in Cheshire, England, daughter of the late John Albert Jackson and Amy Foster Jackson. At an early age, she served in the British Army in England. Mrs. Smothers lived in various locations in the U.S. and overseas while her husband served in the U.S. Army. She returned to Headland in 1979 where she was a member of the First Baptist Church and a former member of the Concord Baptist Church. Mrs. Smothers participated in the Burdeshaw-Solomon Senior Center.


            Mrs. Smothers was preceded in death by her husband, George Wade Smothers, a daughter-in-law, Nancy Smothers, sons-in-law, Joseph Cruz and Greg Tasker, all her sisters and brothers, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mathell and Rupert Sellers, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Myrtle Smothers, and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Welch.


            Surviving relatives include two daughters, Christine Smothers Roney (John), Dothan and Sheila Smothers Cruz (Mike Gilliam), Headland; three sons, Gary W. Smothers, Terry Smothers, and Kevin Smothers (Shelley), all of Headland; sisters-in-law, Shirley Welch and Wyno Dell Harris; a brother-in-law, Wayne Smothers (Marie); sixteen grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Amy Cruz, who lovingly cared for Mrs. Smothers; fourteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
