Shelby Forehand, age 82, transitioned to Heaven on November 20, 2015 surrounded by his family whom he cherished so much. Shelby had experienced declining health in recent years.


 


A memorial service will be held at Ward Wilson Funeral Home on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 11 AM. with Reverend Stacy Stafford and Reverend Ken Harrison officiating.A private graveside service for the family will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. Family will meet family and friends an hour prior to the memorial service beginning at 10 AM. Honorary pallbearers will be the Foy Strickland Sunday School Class and his fellow nursery workers from Southside Baptist Church.


 


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Gentiva Hospice in Dothan, Alabama.


 


He is preceded in death by his parents, Shellie and Tavie Forehand and two children, a daughter, Sheri Forehand and an infant son.


 


He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte; his daughter, Tami Black (Dan) of Baker, FL; his sons, John Forehand (Cristi) and Patrick Davenport (Teresa) of Dothan; grandchildren, Rob Evers, Shelby Leigh, Caroline and Katie Davenport, and a step-granddaughter, Bailey Freeman. Shelby also leaves a brother, Earl Forehand (Avis) of Cottonwood; a sister, Virginia Bayless of Asheville, NC; a sister-in-law, Nelda Northcutt (Charlie); and a special niece, Kay Casey, Tallahassee, FL; as well as many other nieces and nephews.


 


Known to his family lovingly as “Pop,” he filled the role of not just father and dad, but also hero, mentor, champion, guide, and jokester to all who knew him.


 


Shelby was born on August 6, 1933 in Jackson County, Florida and raised in Cottonwood, Alabama. He attended Cottonwood High School and graduated with the Class of 1952. Following graduation, Shelby joined the Army and served his country for two years. While in the service, he served in Ft. Eustis, VA, Greenland, and Newfoundland. Shortly after leaving the Army, he was employed with Meadowgold Milk for over 30 years. Following his retirement, he continued working at Wiregrass Rehab for another five years. He was a long-time member of Southside Baptist Church where one of his favorite jobs was that of working in Nursery/Pre-School, which he did for over 40 years. His love for babies and children was a passion and during those years, he loved on several generations of family that came through the Southside nursery. In addition, Shelby was an avid University of Alabama fan and supporter, as well as a lifelong fisherman, loving his Lake Seminole getaway.
