Sherry Cope Mitchell, a resident of Dothan, died Saturday, December 29, 2018 at her home following an extended illness. It was her 67th birthday.
Celebration of Life services for Sherry will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, January 3, 2019 in the Chapel of the Angels at Woodland at Family First Funeral & Cremation Care with Pastor David Hale officiating. Burial will follow at 2PM at Meadowlawn Memorial Park in Enterprise. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until service time at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Aaron Mitchell, Reid Mitchell, David Weisiger, Mike Woodham, Terry Mitchell, Alan Palmer and Steve Stamp. Honorary Pallbearers will be Greg Hendrix, Major Ryan Mitchell (U.S. Marine Corp.), Andrew Sharp, Steve Strickland, Caleb Messer and Benjamin E. Meredith. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at Dothan Christian Fellowship, 2054 John D. Odom Road, Dothan at 5PM. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to UAB Department of Hematology/Oncology Boshell Building #467, 1808 7th Ave South, Birmingham, AL 35294.
Sherry was born December 29, 1951 in Union Springs, daughter to the late Carl G. and Angela Sorrentino Cope and grew up in Enterprise, Alabama. She graduated from Enterprise High School and attended Enterprise State Junior College for two years before going to Auburn. Sherry graduated from Auburn in 1974 with a BA degree in Sociology and Psychology. She loved her time at Auburn and remained an avid, lifelong fan.
After graduation, Sherry began working at the Social Security Administration in Dothan. She had a long, successful and awarded career for 42 years before retiring in 2017 after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Sherry married Allen K Mitchell, a local Dothan attorney, on October 7, 2000. They had a very happy marriage and were active members at Dothan Christian Fellowship for many years. Sherry had been a faithful, pioneering member of DCF for as long as she lived in Dothan.
Sherry was a member of numerous small groups in the church as well as other women’s Bible studies. She loved God with a passion after dedicating her life to Him in 1972. She began her Christian walk as a young member of Dothan Christian Fellowship and over the years became a mother in the church.
Her interests and hobbies included Bible study, crafts, reading, music, going to the beach and Auburn football (War Eagle).
Sherry is survived by her husband Allen K Mitchell, stepson Aaron (Susan) Mitchell, grandsons Reid, Reilly, Rowan and Rustin; sisters Beverly Cope Holstun and Leslie Cope Stamp (Stephen), Terry L. Mitchell, Ph.D. (Dorothy), Sandra L. Mitchell and many nieces and nephews.
