Shirley Jean Jones Harris, known fondly to all as Granny, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 31, 1943, in Columbia, Alabama, Shirley’s life was a testament to love, generosity, and gentle kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with her family and friends sharing the countless memories they have of Granny. Eulogy to be presented by Cindy Tolar and Sarah Pybus.
Preceded in death by her parents, Aldon and Mary Lee Jones, and her siblings, Johnnie Welch, Doris Fowler, Mack Jones, Donald Jones, Robert Jones, Billy Herman Jones, Fred Jones, and Jerry Jones, Shirley’s memory will be cherished and kept alive by her devoted family. She leaves behind her daughter, Lisa Harvill (Kevin), and son, Tony Harris. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, O’Neal Harris (Ashley), Josh Harris (Marie), Cecilly Hardy-Maye (Josh), Preston Harvill, Jamison Judge Harris, Dakota Harvill (Breanna), and Jeremy Harvill (Kacy), as well as her eight great-grandchildren. Her brother, Troy Jones, special nephew, Austin Harvill, and several nieces and nephews also survive her, along with Bill Harris, the father of her children.
Shirley’s life was rich with simple pleasures. She found joy in watching her favorite older television shows, such as "The Golden Girls," "Reba," and "The Andy Griffith Show." Her faith was important to her, and she spent many hours reading her Bible and journaling her thoughts and prayers. A talented gardener, Shirley could often be found tending to her plants, which brought beauty to her home and joy to those who visited.
Her creativity was boundless, expressed through the beautiful oyster wreaths she made at Hunts and various other crafting projects. Shirley spoke with an open mind and always had time to listen and offer her wisdom. Above all, her life revolved around her children and grandchildren. She was their biggest supporter, attending countless events and celebrating every milestone with pride and love.
Shirley was affectionately known to everyone as "Granny," a name that reflected the warmth and nurturing spirit she extended to not just her own family, but to all who knew her. Her role as a caregiver extended to her siblings throughout their lives, and her compassion led her to volunteer with hospice, providing comfort and care to those in their final days.
The love Shirley gave to the world will not be forgotten. Her spirit, characterized by loving generosity and a gentle demeanor, will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. As we say goodbye to Shirley, we also celebrate the remarkable woman she was and the countless lives she touched with her kindness.
Shirley’s life was a beautiful tapestry of love, care, and unwavering support for her loved ones. Her memory will be held in the hearts of her family and friends as a beacon of the love and joy she so freely shared. Her passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but her legacy of love will continue to live on through her family and the many lives she touched.
