DOTHAN. . .  Shirley Jo Cherry Williams, age 71, of Dothan, passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at home.


       A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022, from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 P.M. in the parlor of the First United Methodist Church of Dothan. The funeral will follow at 2:00 P.M. in the church sanctuary with Reverend Allie Freeman and Reverend Lynn S. Nesbitt officiating. A private graveside service for the family will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


       In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1380 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301 or to the Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge, 1104 Ireland Way, Birmingham, AL 35205-7010.


       Born in Moody Hospital in Dothan on May 8, 1950, Mrs. Williams was raised in Newton, and graduated as Valedictorian of the Dale County High School Class of 1967. While she was in high school, Mrs. Williams served as organist for the First Baptist Church of Headland.


       Mrs. Williams attended the University of Alabama, graduating in 1971 with a  major in Journalism and a minor in Marketing. While at the University, she was a member of various honoraries, Phi Beta Kappa, and Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She later earned a Master’s of Education Degree with a major in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Williams also achieved a Class AA certification at Troy University, Dothan.


       After teaching school for thirty-five years, Mrs. Williams retired in 2012. She worked in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and in Dale County and Dothan City Schools. Her favorite grade was Kindergarten, which she taught for thirty-one years.


       Mrs. Williams was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dothan, the Progressors Sunday School Class, the Altar Guild, the Dothan Ladies Club, and the Cherokee Garden Club. She formerly was a member of Alpha Kappa Delta teachers honorary.


       Mrs. Williams was predeceased by her parents, Durward and Louise Lee Cherry of Newton; her maternal grandparents, Jack A. and Cumie Lee of Pinckard; and paternal grandparents, George and Ellie Cherry of Ariton.


       She is survived by her husband of fifty-years, Rhett Williams of Dothan; her children, Christie Glawson of Helena, AL, and Lee Williams (Ashley), Vestavia Hills, AL, and her grandchildren, Katie and Chase Glawson, Ava and Addison Williams and several cousins.
