Spiro Nicholas Cheriogotis, 90, a resident of Dothan, AL, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at a local hospital.
The family will receive friends at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 20, 2017 with memorial services following at 12:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Clark Cornelius officiating.
Spiro was born on September 13, 1926 in Birmingham, AL and moved to Greece at the age of thirteen. While living in Greece he formed lifelong friendships, learned five languages, and earned a fantastic education. Spiro left Greece, returned to America, and joined the Army at age nineteen near the end of WWII. After finishing his tour of duty, he began his lifetime of entrepreneurship. Spiro managed, owned, and operated numerous businesses in the food and beverage industry. He moved to Dothan in 1969 to further his food service career, later establishing Vend Serve Inc., which he owned for the rest of his life. He was an avid Alabama fan, loved playing golf (especially with the Woodsmen), and was a member and past president of the Dothan Country Club and Dothan Rotary Club. Spiro was of Greek Orthodox faith.
He is survived by his daughter, Carlee Foster; his grandchildren, Spiro Cheriogotis (Lucy), Maria Cheriogotis, Scott Foster, and Gresham Foster; his great-grandchildren, Jack Cheriogotis and Nick Cheriogotis; his niece Marie Sausa (Louis); his daughter-in-law, Jane Cheriogotis and his former daughter-in-law, Joya Wallace (Bill). He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Maria Cheriogotis; his wife, Eleanore Cheriogotis; his sister, Angelula Pradella (Dario); his son, Nick Cheriogotis, and his son-in-law, Scotty Foster.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
