Steven L. Herring of Mobile passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024. He was 66.

Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on May 22, 1957, to Joan Herring and the late Mack Herring, Steve spent his early childhood in Dothan, and Decatur prior to the family’s move to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for his father’s job with NASA in 1963.

As he was completing grammar school at St. Thomas Catholic School, in Long Beach, another NASA opportunity took the family to the Washington, DC area in 1969, where Steve completed middle school. A return to the Coast of Mississippi in 1972 was followed by Steve’s graduation as Valedictorian from Coast Episcopal High School in Pass Christian in 1975.

The Ivy League called, and he selected Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island to further his education, where he double-majored in Economics and International Relations, graduating in 1979.

That was followed by a move to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he completed his Master’s Degree in International Relations at the Wharton School of Business in 1981.

It was during the mid-1970s that his mom and brother moved back to Virginia, where she was employed with various members of Congress in the House of Representatives, and Senate.

Steve’s professional career started in Washington, where he could be near family, and begin a career that took him to Saudi Arabia, New York City, and San Francisco.

The allure of Mobile, Alabama, and a mid-1800’s historic home, drew him back to the Gulf Coast after retirement where he spent the last 24 years.

Steve never stopped learning and was a worldwide traveler. He enjoyed historic homes and spent hours in museums, and libraries.

He also loved his pets, surrounding himself during the last 20 years with Miniature Schnauzers and a Yorkie, who ruled the roost when visiting along with Steve’s mom.

Prior to his retirement, Steve worked as a researcher at the University of California.

He is survived by his mother, Joan of Wildwood, Florida, and his brother, Kyle Herring and wife, Ann of The Villages, Florida.

A private service will be held at the Geneva City Cemetery with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing.
