Susie Byrd Maddox of Enterprise passed away Sunday, September 2, 2012 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was 101.
Funeral services for Mrs. Maddox will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Dr. Michael Mynatt officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Elba. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until service time.
Memorials may be made to the Hillcrest Baptist Church Library or the Missions Ministry of Hillcrest Baptist Church, 500 Alberta Street, Enterprise, AL 36330.
Mrs. Maddox was born February 15, 1911 in the Post Oak Community of Dale County to the late Edward Revestus and Erie Hildreth Byrd. She graduated from Dale County High School in Ozark. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Troy State University and her Master of Arts Degree from the University of Alabama. During her 39 year teaching career, Mrs. Maddox taught at Elba Elementary School, Tuscaloosa County, and her last 15 years were at Hillcrest Elementary School in Enterprise.
She was an active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where she served on various committees and taught Sunday School for many years.
Mrs. Maddox was preceded in death by her husband, James Waitus Maddox; a daughter, Dr. Emma Swindall; son-in-law, Robert Adams; two great grandsons, Jamie Swindall and Parker McQueen; four sisters, Maude Windham, Foy Montgomery, Virginia Sansbury, and Pennie McKnight; five brothers, Curtis, Travis, Mixon, Ben and Emmett Byrd.
Survivors include five daughters, Kate Hale (Byron) Albany, GA, Rebecca Miller (James) Hueytown, Sue Adams, Huntsville, Myra Henderson (Jimmy) Enterprise, Melinda Hollon (Ken) Prattville; a son, Michael Maddox (Wanda) Enterprise; three sisters-in-law, Sue Byrd, Mary Byrd, and Charlotte Byrd. She leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and numerous special nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Gentiva Hospice caregivers and a very special caregiver, Brenda Brown.
