Thomas Edward (Ed) Johnson passed away Saturday, October 28, 2023. He was beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and most recently great-great-grandfather.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Edd Brashier officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Memorial donations may be made to DaySpring Hospice Foundation, 100 Professional Lane, Enterprise, AL 36330.
He was born on November 24, 1924 in Savannah, Georgia, the son of Thomas L. and Dewy Lee Johnson and brother of Sara Johnson Heath and Bernie D. Johnson (all deceased).
Ed grew up in Enterprise and was drafted from high school to fight in Europe during World War II. His field artillery unit saw action from D-Day onward until the war ended. Upon his return, he finished school and married his childhood sweetheart, Louise Rollins, and together they had three children. They went on to celebrate 53 anniversaries before her death in 2001. He later met and married Betty Johnson, and they celebrated 21 years of marriage this year.
He was a long time member of Enterprise First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He worked for many years for Liberty National Life Insurance Company where he excelled because of his love of serving people.
Ed was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his church, and was there every Sunday until his health and the pandemic precluded it. He enjoyed volunteering at the hospital and for the local hospice, fundraising with the Lion’s Club for the vision related projects, and visiting with family and friends.
He is predeceased by his first wife Louse Rollins Johnson.
Ed is survived by his second wife Betty Johnson; two daughters, Rebecca Johnson Baker (Ronnie), Ann Johnson Davenport; son, James Edward Johnson (Rebecca); grandchildren, Jennifer Baker Wells (Wesley); Jonathan Baker (Melissa); Michelle Davenport DePass (Jay); Royce Allen Davenport, Jr. (Lauren); Douglas Buckner Johnson (Sara); Paul Rollins Johnson (Kitty); Benjamin James Johnson (Amelia); Rachel Johnson Garcia (Jacob); Mark Roberts Johnson.
Ed Johnson served his Lord, his church, his country and his family with faithfulness. We are grateful for his nearly 99 years, and he will be missed.
The Johnson children want to thank the professionals from DaySpring Hospice for their extraordinary care over the last few months. Also, Donna Hendrix has been like a daughter to Ed, and we are grateful for all she did. Finally, a special tribute to Betty Johnson who has been Ed’s constant companion for these 21 years and was his loving caregiver during the time of his illness.
