A celebration of Tommy’s life will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ricky Plummer officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5-7 pm. Flowers are being accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund or to Bethel Christian Academy, 3257 East Cottonwood Road, Dothan, AL 36301.
Thomas “Tommy” Edward Godfrey, a resident of Ashford, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was 70 years old. His battle with serious medical issues the last several years showed his courage and faith in facing life challenges with a peace that passed understanding.
Mr. Godfrey was born on August 22, 1952 in Montgomery, Alabama. He attended Montgomery public schools and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1970. Tommy received a Bachelor of Science degree from Troy State University in 1974. After a career in the wholesale grocery business, he began a second career as owner and operator of Godfrey Distributing Company. Tommy was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he taught the Joy Sunday School Class and served on the Senior Adult Ministry team. He will be remembered for his impeccable work ethic, his comical sense of humor, his infectious smile, and his unwavering faith.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward Godfrey and Hazel Thomas Godfrey, his parents-in-law, Samuel Jonathan Hall, III and Mary Egbert Hall, and his brother, Howard Godfrey.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Joan Hall of Ashford; his sons, Jonathan Godfrey of Kinsey and Whit Godfrey of Ashford; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sam and Kathy Hall of Pine Mountain, Georgia; several cousins; two special cousins-in-law, Marion Barker of Dadeville and Ken Knox of Laurel, Mississippi; and family friend, Jeffery Miles of Kinsey.
The Godfrey family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the outstanding team from Gentiva Hospice Care and to Bernistien Oliver for their exemplary care of Tommy and for the support and encouragement they gave the family.
