ABBEVILLE. . .Thomas L. Barton, a resident of Abbeville, died late Thursday morning, October 5, 2017, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility. He was 84.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, October 8, 2017, in the Abbeville United Methodist Church with Reverend Randy Greene, John S. Riley and Reverend Ryan Johnson officiating. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 P.M. Sunday in the Family Life Center of the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abbeville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 100, Abbeville, AL 36310 or to Covenant Care, 1512 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301.
Mr. Barton was born in Caryville, Florida and moved to Abbeville with his family as a teenager. He was a 1952 graduate of Abbeville High School where he excelled in baseball. Mr. Barton played baseball in the minor leagues for the Panama City Flyers and the Midland Indians in Texas. He received a B.S. Degree in Industrial Management from Auburn University. While enrolled at Auburn, Mr. Barton was drafted into the U. S. Army. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier. He also co-owned and operated Abbeville Machine Shop, a family business that his father founded. Mr. Barton was a member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church and the Masonic Order. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Barton, his mother, Voncile Fowler Barton, a sister, Judy Barton, and a nephew, Danny Motley.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Sandra Tiller Barton; two daughters, Milly Tye (Barry), Auburn; and Gina Murphy (Chuck), Abbeville; a sister, Jamie Martin, Dothan and Panama City; four grandchildren, Marybeth Murphy, Clay Murphy, Scott Tye and Sam Tye; a niece, Deborah Loving and a special niece, Dell Money (Jeff).
