Thomas Noble Neilson Etchberger, Jr.


Thomas Noble Neilson Etchberger, Jr., of Dothan, died Monday, April 13, 2015 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 93.


Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2015 at Covenant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kyle Gatlin officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 on Thursday. Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.


Mr. Etchberger was born September 11, 1921 in Ancon, Canal Zone, Republic of Panama and attended school there. He served with the Seabees during WWII in the South Pacific. After the war he served in the military sea transport service where he carried supplies to military stations on the east and west coast of Central and South America. He later transferred to the Panama Canal Company where he was employed in Security Service on the Atlantic and Pacific side.


He held memberships in BPOE in Balboa Canal Zone and in Dothan. He was a 33 degree Mason in Dothan and very active in Boy Scouts in C.Z. Mr. Etchberger was awarded the Silver Beaver and Orden de Buenas Obras (Order of Good Works, exclusive to the Canal Zone Council only). In August of 1983 he retired from the Canal Zone service.


Mr. Etchberger is predeceased by his parents, Catherine and Thomas Noble Neilson Etchberger, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Irene Chan, Betty Snow, Beverly Williams, William Etchberger, Doris Etchberger and a brother, James Etchberger.


Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Doris Chan Etchberger of Dothan; a son, Thomas Noble Etchberger, III (Lisa) of Dothan; grandchildren, Thomas Noble Etchberger IV of Little Rock, AR, and Quyinten Etchberger of Dothan; step grandchildren, Heather Green and Kristopher Pierpont, both of Little Rock, AR and Shawn Johnson of Ozark; a brother-in-law, Harry Y. Chan of Norman, OK; a niece, Karen E. Whitehead of Williamsburg, VA; nephews, James (Joan) of Toano, VA, Thomas (Beverly) of Norfolk, VA, R. Bruce Chan of Norman, OK; Patrick Williams of Trinity, FL, Paul Williams of Atlanta, GA, Richard Paulding of Albany, CA and Howard Paulding of CA; many grand nieces and nephews.
