KINSEY. . .Thurman Ray “Fireball” Hardy, a resident of Kinsey, died late Thursday night, October 29, 2015, at his home. He was 88.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, November 1, 2015, in the Kinsey Baptist Church with Reverend Brad Hardy and Reverend David Starling officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Kinsey Baptist Church “Bus Fund”, 6745 Walden Drive, Kinsey, AL 36303.
Mr. Hardy was born and reared near Headland, son of the late Lonnie Jefferson Hardy, Sr. and Clifford McClenny Hardy. He was a graduate of Houston County High School in Columbia. As a young man, he pitched baseball in the Alabama-Florida Semi-Pro Baseball League and played with the Headland Dixie Runners and the Graceville Oilers. Mr. Hardy also played softball, sponsored and coached softball teams in the Wiregrass area. He was retired from the Railway Express Agency. Mr. Hardy formerly owned and operated Hardy’s Grocery and Gas in Kinsey and Dothan and also owned and operated Hardy’s Par 3 Golf Course.
Mr. Hardy was an active member of the Kinsey Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, taught the Oree Hardy Sunday School Class, served as a Trustee and was active in many other capacities in the church. He was an original member of the Kinsey Town Council. Mr. Hardy was a member of the Dothan Softball Hall of Fame and the Alabama State Sports Hall of Fame. During his lifetime, he coached and sponsored Dixie League Boys Baseball Teams.
Mr. Hardy was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Goodwin Hardy, a son-in-law, Kenneth Weed, two sisters, Mary Ethel Ethridge and Trudie Mae Adkins, five brothers, Oree Hardy, Curtis Hardy, L. J. Hardy, Jr., Lester Hardy and Earnest Hardy.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Melinda Cochran (Johnny), Kinsey; and Lynn Whatley (Brett), League City, TX; two sons, Alan Hardy (Cindy), Tacoma, WA; and Kenny Hardy, Kinsey; sisters-in-law, Janis Hardy, Dothan; and Dot Hardy, Tumbleton Community; ten grandchildren, Monica Cornett (Aaron), Patrick Hardy, Lauren Findley (Robert), Della Hagler, Penny Cochran, J.T. Cochran, Charles
Cochran (Leigh Ann), Patrick Jinks and Christopher Jinks (Allison); seven great-grandchildren, Zachary Cornett, Ethan Findley, Joshua Findley, Tucker Hagler, Evah Harris, Madalyn Cochran and Riley Jinks; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Kimberly Walker and other employees of First Light Home Care, AlaCare Home Health and Dr. Russell Bedsole for loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Hardy during his illness.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Patrick Hardy, Aaron Cornett, J.T. Cochran, Christopher Jinks, Everett Mathis and Wade Ethridge. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Oree Hardy Sunday School Class and “Fireball’s” golfing buddies.
