SFC Tommie Lee “Bill” Peoples was born June 19, 1938 in Kinsey, Alabama to late Richard and Nell Peoples. On the morning of Friday, June 1, 2018, Tommie transitioned from this life as the last of five children.
Tommie joined the US Army on July 26, 1962. He served his country honorably and is remembered today as a wounded Vietnam War Veteran. He is a recipient of a Purple Heart. While stationed at Fort McClellan, Tom met his late wife Susie Moore-Peoples and they were married on May 10, 1979. Tom retired after serving 26 years in the US Army and began working as a civilian driving the shuttle bus for Fort McClellan. He was well known by some in the community as “Bill” but mostly called Deacon Peoples by many of the church members. Mr. Peoples was an active member First Missionary Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama under Rev. Cedric Duncan for many years.
Mr. Peoples lived life to the fullest. He loved people. He took care of the people in his neighborhood even if it meant he would go without. In 2016, Tommie moved back to Dothan, Alabama and joined Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Where he remained until he became ill and could no longer attend.
Tommie was preceded in death by Susie, his loving wife of 32 years; his mother and father Richard and Nell Peoples; his sister Johnnie Mae Peoples-Grace; three brothers J.D., Willie C. and Willie Frank Peoples and a grand-daughter, Lovette Cook-Jefferson.
He leaves to cherish his memories: four daughters and one son, Alice (Kevin) Duke of Dothan, AL, Sonja L. Peoples of Jacksonville, FL, Twanna (Will) Hester of Temples, GA, Gary (Eleanor) Peoples of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Tonya (Mike) Turner of Anniston, AL; eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves behind a devoted friend and care-giver Ronnie “Elliott” Wilson.
Funeral services will be 11 am Friday June 8, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with military honors in Sunset Memorial Park. Burial will then follow at Gates of Heaven Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
