Mr. Thompson, son of the late Alto Hazen Thompson and Myrtle Mathis Thompson was born March 3, 1943, in Dale County near Skipperville and lived there all his life. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Laura Thompson Knurr and his 10 ½ month old grandson, Joshua Adam Knurr.
He was a wonderful loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. His family will always love and remember him as a man of integrity and honesty. He had his own way of doing things and embodied the lyrics of Frank Sinatra’s song, “I Did It My Way.” He was devoted to his family – a strong caring man where words and deeds will live on as his legacy to them.
Mr. Thompson grew up helping his father on the family farm; and from an early age developed a love of all aspects of farming. After graduating from Carroll High School, he worked one year with Page Aircraft in Napier Field AL, then he returned to the farm and began his long and distinguished career as a farmer until his retirement in 2000. Tommy loved the land, wildlife and all things in nature. He instilled this love in his children as his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had done before him. He cherished the fact that he was continuing a legacy from several generations before.
He was a member of Dale County Farmer’s Federation and Dale County Cattlemen‘s Association. During his farming career, he was the recipient of several awards: Dale County Top Peanut Producer of the year with yield of 4,000 lbs. per acre; Forestry Award; and Conservation Farmer of the Year.
Mr. Thompson was a lifetime member of Concord Congregational Methodist Church and was very active in all aspects of church leadership. He has served as Deacon, and a member of The Executive Board. He sometimes sang in the choir. He had a beautiful voice.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 55 years, Gwendolyn Woodard Thompson and their two sons, Scot Anthony Thompson and wife Amy of Dothan; and Marc Hazen Thompson of Skipperville; and their and families. He is also survived by his loving son-in-law, Alex Knurr (wife Laura Thompson Knurr- deceased) and family; one brother, William Robert Thompson and wife Faye of Eufaula; one sister, Margie Thompson Morrison and husband Tom of Skipperville; and a special sister-in-law, Rhoda Woodard Kerr and husband Sonny. Several nieces and nephews are left behind.
The family would like to express their thanks to MD Anderson Cancer Center’s doctors and staff for their exceptional care of Tommy for the past seven years. We offer a special “thank you” to Dr. Wang who has been with Tommy since the very beginning of this journey. We would also like to thank everyone for all the prayers which have lifted us during this time.
