T.R. (SPUD) HOWELL
ABBEVILLE. . .T.R. (Spud) Howell, a resident of Abbeville, died Wednesday afternoon, February 1, 2012, at his home. He was 90.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 3, 2012 in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery-East with Reverend Michael Whitt officiating. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 P.M. Friday at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, Alabama 36302.
Mr. Howell was born in the Mt. Pisgah community of Dale County but was reared in Headland, son of the late Foster Howell and Lessie Parish Howell. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Before moving to Abbeville in 1955, Mr. Howell lived in the Union Community, near Abbeville, and was a former member of the Union Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville and the Jeremiah Sunday School Class. Mr. Howell was retired as the owner and operator of Howell Farm Supply and in earlier years was engaged in the trucking business and farming. He served as Sheriff of Henry County from 1955 until 1959. Mr. Howell was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jack Gordon Skipper, a sister, Era Juanita Shaw and a brother, J. Huron Howell.
Surviving relatives include his wife of seventy one years, Wynell Roney Howell; two daughters, Glenda Skipper and Deborah Riggs and husband, Browning Riggs; a son Roger Howell all of Abbeville; five grandchildren, Glenn Skipper (Pamela), Jacquelyn Adams (Brian), Kelli Daughtry (Chris), Alicia Jacobs (Doug) and Bill Bush (Melissa); and eleven great-grandchildren.
