Travis Lemay Hill passed away on May 22, 2021 at the age of 78, in his hometown of Samson, Alabama, surrounded by his loving family. His battle with cancer over the past year showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the discomfort, Travis came out a hero and stayed strong with a sense of humor and passionate love for his wife and family until the end. His beloved wife, who he endearingly called “Honey”, never left his side.

Travis was family focused, generous and kind-hearted; a military and Vietnam War veteran serving greater than 22 years in the United States Air Force. The military allowed Travis to serve and live across the world. He retired in 1982 from RAF Base Mildenhall, England with the rank of MSgt. During his career he flew on Command & Control Flight Operations, and once transported moon rocks from an Apollo space mission in Houston, TX back to NASA at Cape Canaveral, FL.

He met the love of his life, Carolyn Thomas, greater than 62 years ago and would celebrate 59 years of marriage on June 2. Together, they created an everlasting legacy of beloved family that will carry on for generations to come.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Carolyn, his 3 children, Tim (April), Scott (Jamie), and Keith; 6 grandchildren, Vaughn (Kayla), Cory (Noelle), Rance, Olivia (Gunter), Molly (Andrew), Tanner, Claire (Austin), and Ethan; 9 great grandchildren, Haidyn, Harleigh, Madison, Tatum, Ascher, Eli, Layne, Macie Claire, and Shiloh Rey; 2 sisters, Johnnie Lou (Jerry), and Lavonne (Jim); 1 brotherly, Charles Dewey (Betty), who was raised by the Hill family; and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. and Lucille; sister, Marjorie (Bob); 2 nephews, Bobby and Bruce; 2 nieces, Wanda and Roseanne; and several brother and sisters-in-law from Carolyn’s maternal side of the family.

As the patriarch of an extensive, intimate family, the simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Travis. He enjoyed large family gatherings, grilling under the gazebo, playing with the kids in the swimming pool, negotiating cheap back scratches, and cheering on their family as No. 1 fans during endless year-round activities.

The family will hold a private wake at Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home in Geneva, AL followed by a Military Honors Funeral opened for loved ones and friends at Traveler’s Rest Cemetery in Samson, AL on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 2:00 pm. with Rev. Danny Branch officiating.

To honor his life as a patriot, in lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to any local veterans’ charities, including the Geneva County Veterans Affairs.
