Tyrus L. Waters of Level Plains, Alabama passed away Wednesday June 21, 2023 at his home. He was 89 years of age.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Level Plains on Saturday June 24th, 2023 with visitation one hour prior to the 11 am service, with burial following immediately after at Daleville Memorial Gardens with Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing.
Tyrus was preceded in death by his parents E. Dalton Waters and C. Gladys Scott Waters, brother Autry Waters, sisters Virginia Waters Fillenworth and Robbie Waters McDonald, and brother-in-laws Bill McDonald and Dick Fillenworth, sister in law Shirley Waters and nephews Junior Waters and TJ McDonald.
Survivors include his wife of 64+ years Willene Waters, son Lamar Waters (Kerry), daughters Marsha Reeves (Lee) and Amelia Miller (Win), grandchildren Mandy Waters, Slade Reeves, Keely Reeves Helms, Audra Parker, Taryn Miller and Jennie Johnson, great grandchildren Shani Waters, Cade Waters, Sloane Reeves, Lila Reeves and Roman Helms, brothers Wayne Waters, Jerry Waters, sisters Mary Grantham and Angi Brusse. and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Tyrus graduated from Dale County High School in Ozark Alabama in 1952. He began his military service with the Army 328th Comm/Recon Company, followed by service in the 115th AC&W Squadron in the Air National Guard, finishing his military career in the Army reserve with a total of 30 years of service. Tyrus worked for the aircraft maintenance contract at Fort Rucker from 1956-1996 working his way up to Aircraft Inspector finishing his distinguished career with the Army Aviation Technical Test Center at Cairns Army Airfield. He was a member of the International Association of Machinist (IAM) local 2003 and served on the contract negotiating committee. He served on the supervisory committee for the IAM Credit Union for a number of years as well. Tyrus’s community service for his hometown of Level Plains also included being on the town council for 2 years, serving as Mayor for over 6 years, and was the last Mayor of the town and first Mayor once Level Plains grew to be a city. His accomplishments as Mayor included submitting requests for funding for significant improvements to the town water system that were funded and greatly advanced the capabilities for the town. In his personal life he was married to his wife Willene for almost 65 years, and enjoyed spending time with his family including his 3 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His love of gardening, family genealogy and tinkering were legendary, and he could fix anything and was always ready to help his family and friends. He was a great Father, friend, and mentor.
