Verlon Thomas, of Newton, passed away at his home on Friday, January 13, 2012 after a long illness. He was 71.

Verlon will be laid to rest in a private service for family only. A memorial celebration to honor his life will be held at 4 pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Sunset Memorial Park, and all are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center, PO Box 8781, Dothan, AL 36304.

Verlon was born in Coffee County. He worked in law enforcement in Dale County for 30 years. Verlon was a well respected officer and member of the community.

Verlon is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Shirley Thomas; his daughters, Mischelle (Charles) Andrews, Christie (Dale)Wyatt, and Laura (Troy) Wells; his grandchildren, Hali Wright, Brandon Wright, and Alex Andrews; several nieces, nephews and other family and friends also survive.
