MIDLAND CITY…Verna Phillips Cherry, a former resident of the Mt. Enon Community in Dale County, died Tuesday afternoon, July 14, 2020, in Wesley Place on Honeysuckle. She was 94.


     Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 17, 2020, in the Mt. Enon Baptist Church with Reverend Colt Hudson and Reverend Guy Causey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the graveside services. Social distancing guidelines will be observed. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Enon Baptist Church Building Fund, 10622 South County Road 59, Midland City, AL 36350.


     Mrs. Cherry was born and reared in the Mt. Enon Community of Dale County, daughter of the late James Pharoah Phillips and Bunie Beverett Phillips. She was a 1945 graduate of Midland City High School where she was the class Valedictorian. Mrs. Cherry formerly lived in Dothan before returning to Dale County in 1972. She was a member of the Mt. Enon Baptist Church. Mrs. Cherry was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Cherry, two sisters, Leila Phillips and Gayron Baxley, and a brother, Kermit Phillips.


    Surviving relatives include a daughter, Alexa Cherry Leatherwood (Mark), Midland City; a son, Phillips D. Cherry (Tina), Altoona, AL; three grandchildren, Quintin Underwood (Mara), David Cherry and Jacob Cherry; two step-grandchildren, Krystle Leatherwood and Jonathan Leatherwood; two great-granddaughters, Naomi Underwood and Tinley Singletary.


     Serving as active pallbearers will be David Cherry, Jacob Cherry, Tommy Cherry, Quintin Underwood, Tony Canalejo and Michael Yarbrough.
