Virgil Byron Benton of Dothan passed away peacefully Sunday morning, May 25, 2014, at his home. He was 82.
The family will receive friends at the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Tuesday May 27, 2014 from 1:30 to 3:00 with graveside services following at Memory Hill officiating, Rev Billy Rich.
Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors.
Mr. Benton was born November 26, 1931 and retired from the Chattahoochee Industrial Railroad in 1991. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and fought in the Korean War where he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Fay Cook Benton and his infant daughter Angella Michelle, his parents Jim Wright and Lola Tew Benton, four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include daughters Teresa Shaw (Ben) of Dothan, Velinda Proffer of Dothan, and Starla Benton of Acworth, GA. A sister Frances Barnes of Titusville, FL, a brother Colon Benton (Barbara) of Orlando, FL and a niece-sister Shelby Jean Boyd (Shelley) of Dothan. A sister-in-law Ella Jean Johnson (Johnny) of Lexington, KY. Grandchildren Rachel Jones Gardner, Byron Thetford, Taylor Jones and Bradley Proffer. Two great grandchildren Grayson Gardner and Brinley Fae Gardner. Special friends of the family
