Virginia Carney Moses
Virginia Ruth Carney Moses, a longtime resident of Wicksburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at her residence. She was 88.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 20, 2012 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Tim Schroeder officiating. Burial will follow in Wesley Chapel Cemetery (Geneva County), with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time on Monday.
Virginia was born August 16, 1923 in Hartford, Alabama to John Raymond and Thelma Mosely Hayes and moved to Covington County at an early age. She was a graduate of Red Level High School and then taught school briefly in the early ‘40s. She later married H.R. Carney and they traveled extensively with his crop dusting business. In 1954, she returned home with her husband when he began working as a flight instructor at Ft. Rucker. She later owned and operated Jan’s Beauty Shop in Enterprise for several years. Virginia was a farmer at heart. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended the West Congregation.
Virginia is predeceased by her parents; husbands, H. R. Carney and Bob Moses; sons, Jerry Huggins and Mike Carney; a brother, Harold Hayes and a sister, Jeanette Dumuth.
She is survived by a son, Ray Carney of Wicksburg; a sister, Marjorie Brumbaugh; 6 grandchildren, Becky Troutman, Jennifer, Amanda and Ryan Carney and Lisa Lopez; 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
