ECHO…Virginia Newsome Johnson, formerly of Echo, died early Monday morning, January 5, 2015, at the home of her daughter in Opelika. She was 86.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 7, 2015, in the Echo United Methodist Church with Dr. Mike Shirah officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:00 P.M. Wednesday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Echo United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Brandon Moore, 12380 East State Highway 27, Newville, Alabama 36353.
Ms. Johnson, daughter of the late Richard Calvin Newsome and Pearlie Mae Clark Newsome, was born and reared in Echo where she lived most of her lifetime. She formerly lived in Ozark, before moving to Opelika in November 2013. Ms. Johnson was formerly employed by Alabama Electric Company in Dothan in the accounting department. She was a member of the Echo United Methodist Church, the Community Cottage Prayer Group and Echo Homemakers and Community Leaders. Ms. Johnson was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gerald Sullivan, a sister, Louise Newsome Outlaw, three brothers, Hulon Newsome, Haley Newsome, and Harold Newsome.
Surviving relatives include her daughter, Brenda Johnson Sullivan, Opelika; five sisters, Imogene Marshall, Dothan; Margaret Smith (Bob), Apopka, FL; June Murray, Dothan; Elaine Woodham (Edward) and Judy Burg (Charlie), all of Ozark; three grandchildren, Lance Patrick Sullivan, Mark Ashley Sullivan, and Gina Maria Sullivan (Daniel Bateman); a step-great-granddaughter, Katherine Bateman; and a sister-in-law, Betty Newsome, Midwest City, OK.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Charlie Burg, Edward Woodham, Brent Murray, Mike Lewis, Tommy Burg and Luke Stevens.
