VIVIAN KNIGHT STARLING
HEADLAND…Vivian Knight Starling, a resident of Headland, died Thursday afternoon, June 06, 2013, at her home. She was 92.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 08, 2013, in the Headland Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:50 P.M. Saturday at the mortuary in Headland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rockbridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303, or to Headland Baptist Cemetery Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, 301 East Church Street, Headland, AL 36345.
Mrs. Starling was born on August 29, 1920, and was reared in the Tumbleton Community of Henry County, daughter of the late George T. Knight and Blanche Spann Knight. She was a graduate of Newville High School and after high school, attended Massey Draughon Business College in Montgomery. Upon graduation from Massey Draughon, Mrs. Starling moved to Abbeville and was employed by the PMA office. In 1943, Vivian married Gwynn Starling, just prior to him leaving for Europe to serve his country during World War II. Upon Gwynn’s discharge from the Army, they moved to Auburn where Vivian was employed by Auburn University in the office of the Registrar while Gwynn attended Auburn University. In 1949, Vivian and Gywnn moved to Headland where they lived the remainder of their lifetime.
Mrs. Starling was a member of the First Baptist Church of Headland and the Adult IV Women’s Sunday School Class. She retired as a volunteer with the “Tuesday Women of Headland” at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center after twenty years service. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Gwynn Starling, and a sister, Lillian Knight Knowles.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Susan Starling Harman and husband, John, Milton, FL; two grandsons, Joe Harman and James Harman; two special nieces, Linda Knowles and Gayle Knowles Johns, both of Headland; a brother-in-law, Bill Starling and his wife, Virginia Starling, Abbeville; several other nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Covenant Hospice, Headland Fire & Rescue, Pat Roberts, Ruth Webb, and Peggy Strawder for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Starling during her illness.
A special thank you to her caring nieces, Linda Knowles and Gayle Johns, for their care and devotion to Mama.
