Walter Crawford Drake, Jr. passed peacefully on July 20, 2024, and was embraced by the arms of Jesus.

Born on June 23, 1941, in Birmingham, Alabama to Walter and Hilda Drake, Crawford grew up to be a man of strong faith and vast interests. He graduated from Sylacauga High School in 1959, continued his education at Mississippi College where he graduated in 1963, attended the University of Florida in 1966, and earned a master’s degree from Troy State University in 1985.

On September 1, 1963, Crawford married the love of his life, Betty Ford. Together they raised two sons: Walter Crawford Drake III and Webster Ford Drake. Crawford dedicated over four decades to teaching Sunday School, serving as a Deacon, and participating in various church committees. His commitment to community service extended through his work with numerous faith-based organizations and leading Bible studies.

An avid sportsman, Crawford led his college tennis team as captain and later channeled his passion for sports into a coaching career that included Titusville, Cocoa, Wildwood, and Chattahoochee in Florida and Ashford and Sparkman in Alabama. Upon retiring from education, he embarked on a second career helping individuals plan their retirements. He cherished golf, traveling, and supporting the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Known for his thoughtful nature and wisdom, Crawford was a cherished friend and mentor, profoundly touching the lives of many students and athletes. His legacy of compassion, passion, intelligence, and determination remains a guiding light to all who knew him.

Crawford was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Hilda, and his son, Walt. He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Web (Sharon); daughter-in-love, Cindy Steelman Drake; sister, Mary Jo Maples (Dick); four grandchildren, Katie Gamble (Austin), Sarah, Lauren, and Jon David; and great-grandson, Grayson Gamble.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Southeast Alabama Association Ministry Center or by treating loved ones to a memorable dinner in his honor.

A celebration of Crawford’s life will be held at Heritage Baptist Church on Friday, July 26 at 2:00 p.m., preceded by a visitation beginning at noon. A graveside service will follow on July 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Drake Cemetery, Huntsville, AL.
