COLUMBIA. . .Walter Green Rogers, Sr., a resident of Columbia, died early Thursday afternoon, September 29, 2016, in the Dogwood Manor Assisted Living in Abbeville. He was 87.


            Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Saturday, October 1, 2016, in the First Baptist Church of Columbia with Pastor Tony Deese officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbia City Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 A.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary.  


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Columbia, P.O. Box 267, Columbia, AL 36319 or to a favorite charity.


            Mr. Rogers was born and reared in Williams Station, near Columbia, son of the late Edwin Harmon Rogers and Bertha Cannon Rogers. He was a 1949 graduate of the Houston County High School in Columbia. Mr. Rogers lived most of his adult lifetime in Greenville, Alabama before returning to Columbia in 1996. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia and a former member of the First Baptist Church of Greenville. While living in Greenville, he was a member of the Civitan Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Fort Dale Academy. Mr. Rogers was a member of the Columbia Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Newton Rogers, a sister, Mary Conville, and three brothers, Edwin H. Rogers, Jr., Robert Rogers and Sam Rogers.


            Surviving relatives include three sons, Walter Green Rogers, Jr., Birmingham; Michael Cannon Rogers (Eileen), Columbia; and Edwin Newton Rogers (Janice), Wetumpka; six grandchildren,  Kathleen Cazenavette, Olivia Harmon (Jerome), Michael Rogers, Hunter Rogers (Leah), Cole Rogers and Matt Rogers; three great-grandchildren, Jackson Cazenavette,  Emma Gail Harmon and Bella Harmon.


            Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Bible Class and the sitters and caregivers.


            The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Dogwood Manor Assisted Living in Abbeville for the love and kindness shown to Mr. Rogers during his illness.
