Walter Griggs, a resident of Dothan, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2022. He was 62 years old.
A celebration of his life will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 2, 2022 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Gates of Heaven Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday.
Walter was born on February 5, 1960 to the late Mr. Bobby Lee Griggs, Sr. and Mrs. Willie Ruth Gordon Griggs. He was the eighth of twelve children. Walter grew up as a young man who wanted to accomplish great things through hard work and dedication. Growing up he excelled in academics in high school. After graduating Dothan High School, Walter joined the United States Army. During his active-duty career, he served as a Section Lead for the MGM-31 Pershing Missile. The assignment required him to be stationed in West Germany, The Republic of South Korea, and Fort Still Oklahoma.
Walter was a “Jack of all Trades” with many talents. He was a man of integrity, a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was fun to be around, and cherished being with his family and friends. Walter had a flair for fixing things. In the beginning, he learned how to repair cars and trucks by watching and passing wrenches to his dad. After his Army career, he attended Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama and graduated with an Automotive Technology degree. Mr. Crawford Pride was Walter’s mentor and provided valuable information that resulted in Walter successfully opening is own automotive repair shop that he affectionally named “Wilma’s Auto”.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby Lee Griggs, Sr. and Mrs. Willie Ruth Gordon Griggs; sisters, Mary A. Griggs, Mrs. Dorothy M. Griggs Miles and Mrs. Barbara Griggs Hopkins; brothers, Mr. Willie James Griggs and Mr. Bobby Lee Griggs, Jr.
He leaves behind a testament of love to cherish his memory, a loving wife, Wilma Griggs; three sons, William Griggs, Kevin Griggs and Briant Griggs; one stepson, Shean Roman; one stepdaughter, Becky Newby; three grandsons, Alex, Jaxton and Briant Griggs, Jr.; three step grandchildren, Lola, Ivana and McKinzie; three sisters, Ms. Bettie Griggs Hopkins, Ms. Jerry Griggs Ewing and Ms. Eva Griggs; three brothers, Mr. Robert (Janice) Griggs, Mr. Charles Griggs and Mr. Eddie Griggs; and a host of niece and nephews. Additionally, Walter acted as a father figure and accepted Mr. Christopher “Chris” Webster as a son. They spent many hours working closely together at Wilma’s Auto repairing mechanical defects.
