Walter T. "Walt" Cooley, Jr., a resident of Dothan passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at his residence. He was 76 years old.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 9am -10am Tuesday.
Mr. Cooley was born August 17, 1941 in Houston County and lived the early part of his life in Dothan. He attended Dothan City Schools and was a graduate of Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA. He also attended the University of Georgia, St. Petersburg Junior College, and Manatee Junior College in Bradenton, FL. He was employed with the Western Union Telegraph Co., the Dothan Police Department, the Sarasota Police Department, and lastly with the Southern Company at Farley Nuclear Plant for 20 years as the Assistant Chief of Security until his retirement in 1997. Mr. Cooley was a member of Webb Baptist Church where he was a member of the Hosanna Sunday School Class. He was also a member of Dothan Elks Lodge #1887, Dothan Masonic Lodge #466, he was a 32º Scottish Rite Freemason, Valley of Dothan, Orient of Alabama. He was an avid golfer and member of the Dothan National Golf Club at Olympia Spa since 1973 and was a general aviation private pilot.
Mr. Cooley was preceded in death by his parents, Walter T. Cooley and Sarah Gladys Tyler Cooley; his sons, Thomas M. Cooley and Mark Edward Cooley; and his sister, Mary Sue Cooley.
Survivors include his wife, Linda L. Cooley; daughter, Tracie A. (Dr. Matt) Helms; granddaughter, Michele A. Cooley; sister, Patricia A. Burns; brother, Davie T. Cooley; nieces, Cheryl (Robin) Hughes, Sarah (Michael) Hegwood, Nicole Cooley Woodruff, and Sarah Beth Cooley; nephew, Matthew Mancuso; great nieces, Christie Hegwood (Brett) Johnson and Brooke Hegwood (Adam) Williams; great nephews, Steffen Hughes and Matt Hughes; four stepsons, Scott Seaburn, Pat Seaburn, Mike Seaburn and Russ Seaburn.
