ABBEVILLE. . .Wayne Smothers, a resident of Abbeville, died Monday afternoon, May 4, 2020, at his home. He was 75.
In consideration of community health and public safety due to the COVID-19 Virus, a graveside service for family and close friends will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 7, 2020, in the Judson Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Kenneth Preston officiating. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. Following current COVID-19 guidelines, the family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the sanctuary of the Judson Baptist Church.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Encompass Home Health & Hospice, 3379 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36305.
Wayne Smothers was born and reared in Henry County, near Headland, son of the late Henry Wade Smothers and Vera Myrtle Green Smothers. He attended Headland High School and served his country in the Alabama Army National Guard. Wayne formerly lived at White Oak Creek on Lake Eufaula before returning to Abbeville where he lived most of his lifetime. Wayne was a member of the Concord Baptist Church. He was retired, due to disability, as a truck driver from Cutler Egg Products. Wayne was precdeded in death by two sisters, Mathell Sellers and Wynodell Harris and a brother, George Smothers.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Marie Norton Smothers; three sons, Phillip Smothers, David Smothers and Jeff Smothers, all of Headland; two step-sons, Russell Bailey and Kenneth Bailey (Angela), all of Abbeville; a sister, Shirley Welch, Headland; three grandchildren, Ashley, Amber and Tiffany; five step-grandchildren, Morgan, Jamie, Aaron, Brooke and Paige; several great-grandchildren.
