SFC Wilbert D. Thomas (U.S. Army Ret), 74, a resident of Dothan passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at the William F. Green State Veterans Home in Bay Minette, AL.
Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Thursday July 30, 2015 at the Sunset Memorial Park Pavilion with Father Patrick Gallagher officiating.
Mr. Thomas was born September 3, 1940 in White Plains, NY and was raised in the Bronx, NY. He graduated from Bishop Dubois Catholic High School where his mother taught religion. He joined the U.S. Army and served for over 22 years as a highly decorated Avionics Equipment Supervisor retiring as a Sergeant First Class. He served for a tour in the Korean War and 2 tours in the Vietnam War. Following his military retirement he worked in various positions with the post office, the A-train, and finally with the Houston County Sheriff's Department as a deputy. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert J. and Cora T. Thomas, and a sister Patricia Thomas.
Survivors include his wife Christine Thomas; daughters, Cora Christy Spann and Peggy Bigham; a son, Duane Bighem; grandchildren, Courtney D. Thomas, Christopher Bighem, Adrian Bighem, and Corinthia Bighem; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Talbert Thomas; a niece Alana Thomas and her daughter Zakiya Mtonya.
