Wilda was born in Red Level, AL on March 19, 1941, to the late Vernon and Stella Stowers Purnell. She attended Red Level High School where she was a cheerleader. After graduating in 1959, she went on to attend Troy State University for about half of a year. During her short time at Troy, she came home one weekend and a gentleman by the name of Charlie Stough caught her eye at a local dance. They were married soon after and had 55 joyous years of marriage.
After college, she started working at the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Andalusia where she was the secretary. Wilda and Charlie moved to Samson where she served as the librarian and he coached. They then moved to Geneva where she worked as an office secretary for James A. Mulkey Elementary School for over 25 years.
In her later years she became an avid Braves fan, especially after her husband Charlie passed away. She rarely missed a game on television, even through her hospital stays.
“Maw”, as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren, loved her family dearly. Mrs. Stough will be remembered for her southern hospitality, generosity, beautiful smile, and gentle spirit.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Stough; daughter, Susan Lee Stough; two brothers, James and John Purnell; two sisters-in-law, Louise and Kathy Purnell.
