Wilford Aubrey Powell of Samson, AL passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at his home. He was 94 years old.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2020 in the chapel of Warren Holloway Ward Funeral home in Geneva. Burial will follow with full military honors at Liberty Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery and Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
Mr. Powell was born in Geneva County, AL on June 12, 1925 to the late William Ellis and Ollie V. Powell. Mr. Powell was an accomplished pilot. His love for flying was evident and he enjoyed taking neighbors and friends up for an afternoon flight. He also had a love for nature. He proudly planted over 20,000 long leaf pine trees when he retired and returned to Geneva County in 1987. Mr. Powell proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II . He was at Normandy and took part in six different invasions in the South Pacific. Later, he bravely flew supplies into soldiers during the Vietnam War. In his older years when life became simpler, he enjoyed a good visit with friends on the front porch and fishing in the Pea River every chance he got.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one brother, Bill Powell, and one sister, Frances G. Powell.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bernice B. Powell of Temple Hills, MD; one son, Michael K. Powell of Temple Hills, MD; two daughters, Brenda A. Powell of Samson, AL and Karen S. Powell of Temple Hills, MD; two sisters, Faye Stanford of Geneva, AL, and Lola Christine Powell of Saraland, AL.
