William Alonza Roughton, devoted patriarch and friend, died peacefully, attended by his wife Ann, on September 23, 2016, at the age of 86.
Bill, son of James Houston Roughton and Mary Francis Bowden, was a native of Columbus, Georgia. He attended Jordan High School where he was active playing saxophone in the Robert Barr band. Bill met his wife Ann in Andalusia where he was running a restaurant for his mother. After Bill and Ann married, Bill started working for Morrison’s Cafeterias where he worked until he retired. Bill began his 35 year career with Morrison’s as a food runner in 1950 and ended his career in 1985 as a Senior Vice President. During their retirement, he and Ann lived in Jackson, Mississippi; Columbus, Georgia; and Dothan, Alabama. They have lived here for the past 23 years. Bill was a member of the Dothan First United Methodist Church.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his sibling James Houston Rughton, Jr.
He is survived by his wife Ann Roughton, his children Michael Maurice Gordon, William Alonza Roughton, Jr., and Angela Karen Roughton Hitt and their respective families. He is also survived by his siblings Betty Johnson of Columbus, Georgia and Jynean Baker of Gambrills, Maryland and their respective families.
Funeral services will be held at Ward Wilson Funeral Home at 2414 Hartford Highway at 11:00 am on Monday, September 26th. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 am preceding the service.
