COLUMBIA, ALABAMA. . .William Arlyn “Bill” Wente, Sr., a resident of Columbia, Alabama, passed away late Tuesday night, July 4, 2023, at his home. He was 82.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, July 30, 2023, in the First Baptist Church of Columbia with Reverend Joey Hudspeth officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dothan Area Botanical Gardens, 5130 Headland Avenue, Dothan, AL 36303 or to Columbia Historical Society, P.O. Box 335, Columbia, AL 36319.
Mr. Wente was born and reared in Mobile, Alabama, son of the late Arlyn Kenneth Wente and Elsie Burkholder Wente. He was a graduate of Murphy High School and received a B.S. Degree in Business Administration from Auburn University. While a student at Auburn, he served in the Army R.O.T.C. and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He served his country during the Vietnam War era and was discharged a 1st Lieutenant. Upon discharge from the Army, Mr. Wente attended the University of South Alabama and received a Masters Degree in Business Administration. He retired from Scott Paper Company as Regional Distribution Manager after thirty-five years of employment. In 2000, Mr. Wente moved to a life of hunting and fishing at his beloved home “Sandhill” in Houston County, Alabama. He was a member of Government Street United Methodist Church in Mobile. Mr. Wente was preceded in death by his son, William Arlyn “Chip” Wente, Jr.
Surviving relatives include his wife of sixty years, Patricia Odom Wente, a sister, Mary Wente Holycross (Bob), Livingston, AL; brother-in-law, James G. “Bubba” Odom and sister-in-law, Betty Morris Odom, nieces, Brittney Odom Armstrong (Adam), Bettina Odom Weisinger (Andy) and Ashlee Holycross Gillespie (Jimmy), nephews, Bobby Holycross (Kim) and Gray Holycross (Holly), great nieces, Sarah Rhames Weisinger, Anna Holycross, Katelyn Holycross, Emma Gillespie, Molly Gillespie, Emma King Armstrong, Whiddon Armstrong and Julianne Holycross; great nephews, Livingston Weisinger and Judson Holycross.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Gentiva Hospice for the loving care and kindness shown to Bill and his family during his illness.
