William "Bill" Murray

William "Bill" Murray, a venerable centenarian, a devoted family man, and a patriot, passed away on May 12, 2024, in Ft. Novosel, Alabama, after an extended illness. Born on December 10, 1923, in Pennsylvania, Bill's life was a testament to the values of dedication, service, and love.

Bill's journey began in Pennsylvania, where he was nurtured by his parents and where his early years were filled with the beginnings of a life that would be marked by courage and intelligence. The call to serve his country saw Bill joining the United States Army, where he proudly wore the uniform for 20 years. His commitment to his nation was unwavering, and during his 20 years of active duty, he exemplified what it means to be faith-filled and courageous.

After his distinguished military career, Bill continued to serve as a civil servant. His work as a programming system analyst showcased his sharp mind and computer skills, as he developed intricate systems to track inventory for the Army. His expertise led him to Washington, D.C., where he managed student loans, contributing to the education of many. Bill also channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into the successful ownership of an Irish Pub in Maryland, "The Village Tavern," which remains a vibrant establishment to this day.

Bill's intellect was matched by his zest for life and his interests. A keen golfer, he enjoyed the sport until he was 96, demonstrating his remarkable vitality. His faith was an integral part of his life, and he was a dedicated member of St. Columba Catholic Church. His love for photography allowed him to capture moments of beauty and significance, creating lasting memories. Even after the passing of his beloved wife, Arlene Murray, in 2014, to whom he was married for over 67 years, Bill lived alone and remained active, embodying the spirit of independence.

His family was the cornerstone of his life. Though preceded in death by his wife Arlene, his sons, Michael and Dennis, and his siblings, Bob Murray, Bernice Bockmon, and Katherine “Teen” Huck, Bill's legacy continues through his son William "Bill" Murray, Jr. and his wife, Huoi, his six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. They will forever cherish the memories and the lessons he imparted.
