Mr. William D. (Bill) Burns of Geneva, AL, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday morning, April 30, 2017, at Wiregrass Medical Center in Geneva surrounded by his loving family. He was 70. Mr. Burns was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at El Bethel Baptist Church, Chancellor, AL, with Rev. Dave Hingson and Rev. Paul Schelm. officiating. Interment will follow at Eden Baptist Church Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to service at El Bethel Baptist Church.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s honor to Lions Club International, American Cancer Society and El Bethel Baptist Church.
Mr. Burns was born August 3, 1946, in Coffee Springs, AL to the late Paul Lester and Regna Phillips Burns.
Mr. Burns was a 1964 graduate of Coffee Springs High School. Bill earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees in PE/Biological Science and his AA Certification in Administration/Supervision from Troy State University.
Mr. Burns dedicated his life in serving others as a Christian, patriot, educator, and volunteer.
Mr. Burns served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1967. He was a combat medic with the First Calvary Division in the Vietnam War.
Mr. Burns served as a teacher, coach and school administrator with the Daleville City Schools from 1970-1997. He served as Superintendent of Geneva County Schools from 1997-2004. He also served as the Director of Geneva County Family Resource Center from 2005-2006. Lastly, he served as Superintendent of Quitman County Schools, Georgetown, GA from 2006-2011.
Mr. Burns was a faithful member of El Bethel Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Brotherhood Director, usher, and discipleship training teacher. He was a member of Lions Club International from 1978-2017. He was currently serving as President of the Geneva Lions Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Carol Martin Burns of Geneva, AL; one daughter, Cindi M. Westcott (Brett) of Wasilla, AK; one son, Gregory W. Burns and friend Yolinda Baquero of Houston, TX; three grandsons, Coultin M. Westcott of Boise, ID, Ayden G. and Jared S. Burns of Houston, TX; one granddaughter, Britainy M. Westcott of Wasilla, AK; one brother, Jerry M. Burns (Regina) of Coffee Springs, AL; one uncle, Emmett B. Phillips of Gaskin, FL; two sisters-in-law, Linda M. Messer and Rhonda M. Huguley and husband Tommy all of Coffee Springs, AL as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
