ABBEVILLE. . .William Daniel Brooks, a resident of Abbeville, died Sunday afternoon, October 19, 2014, at his home. He was 85.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 21, 2014, in the Union Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery-East. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Union Free Will Baptist Church, c/o Carol Johns, 206 Briarhill Road, Abbeville, AL 36310.
Mr. Brooks was a native of Columbus, Georgia and was reared in Abbeville, son of the late John Robert Brooks and Maudie Herring Brooks. At an early age, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served his country during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Brooks retired, with the rank of Master Sergeant, from the Army after twenty-four years service. After retirement from the military, he was employed by the State of Alabama. Mr. Brooks was a member of the Union Free Will Baptist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annis Scoggins Brooks, a son, Danny Brooks, granddaughters, Kiley Roberts, and Kamberlyn Nicole Day, and three brothers, Robert Brooks, James Brooks, and W. C. Brooks.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Kathy B. Roberts (Joel), Abbeville; Billie B. Sanders (John Rex), Seneca, S.C.; and Lisa B. Starling (Bruce), Abbeville; a son, Marvin E. Brooks, Abbeville; a sister, Merle Cotton (Gene), Columbus, GA; eight grandchildren, Stacy Blankenship (Bill), Ashley Sanders, Andrew Roberts (Heather), Blake Brannon, Joshua Brooks (Melanie), Benjamin Day (Tonya), Bryant Day (Brandy), and Jessica Feggins (Vince); thirteen great-grandchildren, and his beloved canine friend, “Buster".
Serving as active pallbearers will be Grandsons.
