William E. Elliott, Sr.


 


William E. Elliott, Sr. of Dothan, died peacefully at his home in Dothan on Monday, January 2, 2012. He was 93.


 


A memorial service in celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 205 Holly Lane in Dothan, Alabama. A reception of thanksgiving for his life will be held in the church Parish Hall following the service, to which all his friends are invited. Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street has charge of arrangements.


 


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Children’s Fund of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 205 Holly Lane, Dothan, AL, 36301.


 


Mr. Elliott was born September 14, 1918 in Pittsburg, PA, the son of Jesse Harlan and Helene von Hoff. He moved to Deland, Florida at an early age and graduated from high school there. He was offered a football scholarship to Stetson University but instead heeded the call to join the Navy in 1937. Following his discharge in 1940, he worked with the Civil Aeronautics Administration where he met his wife, Pat. They were married on Dec. 7, 1941.


 


In 1944, he was recalled into the Navy and his expertise with the Morse Code took him to Pensacola, FL. In 1946, after his military service, he moved to Dothan and worked at the Dothan Airport with the Federal Aviation Administration.  In 1968, he was transferred to Dannelly Field, Montgomery, AL, as Chief of Station. In 1974, he retired from the FAA and returned to Dothan after 30 years of service.  Following his aviation career, Mr. Elliott served as church administrator for the Episcopal Church of the Nativity for 20 years where he was a very active and devoted member.  Mr. Elliott enjoyed Ham Radio, fishing, swimming, woodworking and lived life to the fullest.


 


Mr. Elliott is predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Patricia Ann Eastlake Elliott, his parents and a sister, Mary Louise Kelly.


 


Survivors include a daughter, Carrie Steincamp of Huntsville; a son, Captain William Elliott, Jr. USN (Ret) (Lou) of Dothan; 4 grandchildren, James Steincamp (Tomomi) of Richmond, VA, William Steincamp of Cumberland, VA, SSGT William Elliott III (Jana) of Charleston, SC, and Suzanne McMahan (Chris) of Dothan; 4 great-grandchildren, Isaac Steincamp and Hannah Steincamp of Richmond, VA, Cadence McMahan of Dothan and William Walker Elliott of Charleston, SC.


 


The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to his caregivers, Sybil, Krisie, Lori and Betty. They would also like to express their gratitude to Covenant Hospice who provided loving care to Mr. Elliott.
