WILLIAM FREEMAN COVINGTON
ABBEVILLE. . .William Freeman Covington, a resident of Abbeville, died Tuesday afternoon, May 29, 2018, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility. He was 82.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Friday, June 1, 2018, in the Edwin United Methodist Church with Reverend Kenneth Preston officiating. Burial will follow in the Edwin Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 P.M. Friday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Edwin United Methodist Church, c/o Sue Taylor, 360 County Road 235, Clopton, AL 36317.
Mr. Covington was born and reared in the Edwin Community, son of the late William Henry Covington and Lucille Freeman Covington. He was a 1953 graduate of Abbeville High School. Upon graduation from high school, Mr. Covington enlisted in the U. S. Army and served his country during the Korean War era. Upon discharge from the military, he enrolled in Troy University where he received a B.S. Degree in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. He was awarded a National Merit Scholarship to the University of Montevallo where he received a Masters Degree. Mr. Covington also attended Auburn University, the University of Tennessee, the College of Charleston and the Central Florida Community College. In earlier years, Mr. Covington taught in Ft. Gaines and Andrews College in Cuthbert. He served five terms as the Superintendent of Education of the Henry County School System. After retirement from the school system, he attended the Central Florida Community College and earned a degree as a Health Physicist. He also formerly taught Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at the Randolph-Clay High School in Cuthbert. Mr. Covington was an active member of the Edwin United Methodist Church and served as a Trustee, Sunday School Teacher and Chairman of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee. While serving as Superintendent, he was active in various civic activities in Abbeville. Mr. Covington lived all his life in the Edwin Community before moving to Abbeville in 2006. He was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Polly Kirkland Covington; a daughter, Wendi Fields (Frank), Henagar, AL; a son, Michael Covington (Robyn), Deerpoint Lake, Florida; four grandchildren, Jordan Fields, Drew Fields, Jason Nunnery and Thomas Nunnery; sisters-in-law, Sara Roland and Margaret Kirkland Bowden; several cousins including special cousins, Sam Freeman (Betty) and Martha Jenkins (Glenn).
