Military honors will be rendered in William’s honor at 10 am on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 in the Sunset Memorial Park Helicopter Pavilion.
William Harold Hetrick, known affectionately to family and friends as William, was a beacon of love and adventure throughout his life. Born on June 9, 1960, in Enterprise, Alabama, William's journey through life was marked by devotion, service, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones. After a valiant battle with a recent illness, William passed away on October 3, 2024, surrounded by the warmth of his family in Birmingham, Alabama.
William's story began in the small town of Enterprise, where his youthful spirit was as vibrant as the Alabama sun. He carried that spirit into adulthood, becoming a proud serviceman in the US Navy for six years. His dedication to his country was matched only by his commitment to his family. William's heart found its match in Linda, his beloved wife of 41 years. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, welcoming two sons, Christopher and Jasper Hetrick, into the world. The joy of his family grew with the arrival of his grandson, Xander Wayne Hetrick, who captured his grandfather's heart completely. William was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Benton.
William's love extended beyond his immediate family to his sister, Maggie Hughes; his brother, Barry Hetrick; sisters-in-law, Janice Warren and Shelley Alberson; and brother-in-law, Shane Pope. He was cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends, and coworkers from Ft. Novosel, each of whom held a special place in his life. His family ties were strong, and the memories created with them will be a source of comfort and joy for years to come.
His professional life was characterized by the same loyalty and hard work he demonstrated in every aspect of his life. William spent 37 years as a structural aircraft mechanic, employed with M1 and other contractors at Ft. Novosel. His dedication to his craft earned him the respect and admiration of his coworkers and the broader community.
William's interests painted a picture of a man who embraced life's adventures and simple pleasures with equal enthusiasm. He was an avid Harley Davidson rider, recalling with fondness the thrill of riding the Tail of the Dragon with his wife and brother-in-law just two years ago. His fur babies brought him endless joy, as did cheering for Alabama Football and watching girls' softball. A true homebody at heart, William cherished his family above all else, though he never turned down a Saturday meal at Chili's, his favorite weekend tradition.
As we bid farewell to William Harold Hetrick, we celebrate a life that shone brightly, touched many, and left a legacy of love and courage. His absence will be deeply felt, but the memories he created will continue to light the way for those who were fortunate enough to know him. William's story does not end with his passing; it lives on in the hearts of every person he inspired, in every life he enriched, and in every moment he made better simply by being himself.
