HEADLAND. . .William Ray “Bill” Snell, a resident of Headland, died early Thursday morning, December 21, 2023, in the Graceville Health Center, Graceville, Florida. He was 91.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 23, 2023, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders, Jr. and Reverend Phil Craddock officiating. Burial will follow in the Brown’s Cemetery, near Skipperville. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. at the mortuary in Headland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Burdeshaw-Solomon Senior Center, 107 Boynton Street, Headland, AL 36345.
Bill Snell was born and reared in Dale County, near the Brown’s community, son of the late James Barnett Snell, Jr. and Kizzie Eudora Brown Snell. He was a 1950 graduate of Dale County High School in Ozark. At an early age, Bill enlisted in the Army National Guard, Ozark unit, which was activated during the Korean War and served in Japan. He attended Auburn University and received a B A Degree in Economics from the University of Washington where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. In later years, Bill graduated from Jefferson State Community College with a degree in Funeral Service Education. While living in Ozark, he served as President of Snell-Owen Company as an independent insurance agent and broker from 1950 until 1980. In 1985, Bill established J & S Mortician’s Service in Headland which he operated until 2016. He also served as the Director of the Burdeshaw-Solomon Senior Center from 2000 until 2005. Mr. Snell was a member of First Baptist Church of Headland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Sellers Snell, a step-son, Greg Tate and two step-granddaughters, Pam Tate and Kaylee Wilson.
In earlier years and as a resident of Ozark, Bill served as President of the Ozark-Dale County Chamber of Commerce, Ozark Rotary Club and the Ozark-Dale County Unted Way. He served as a Past Commander of the Ozark American Legion Post. Bill formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Independent Insurance Agents of Alabama. He served as President of the Headland Chamber of Commerce and was named Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors. Bill formerly lived in Ozark and Lake Eufaula before moving to Headland in 1989.
Surviving relatives include step-sons, Danny J. Wilson, Derick Wilson (Kay), Timothy Tate (Linda) and Tod Tate; several step-grandchildren including, Jason Wilson and Dillon Wilson and several other step-grandchildren from the Tate family; and several step-great-grandchildren.
