ECHO COMMUNITY. . . William Rex Stevens, a resident of the Echo Community of Dale County, died Tuesday morning February 6, 2018, in a Dothan hospital. He was 82.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 12, 2018, in the New Hope Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Tim Sewell officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Free Will Baptist Church, c/o Jo Ann Ammons, 508 County Road 46, Midland City, AL 36350.
Mr. Stevens was born and reared in the Echo Community in Dale County, son of the late Willie E. Stevens and Vera Sewell Stevens. At an early age, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served eight years. Mr. Stevens lived in Denver before returning to Dale County in 1973. He retired from Twitchell in Dothan as a Supervisor. In earlier years, he was engaged in the fencing business. Mr. Stevens was an active member and served as a Deacon in the New Hope Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irma Schular, a brother, Ray Stevens, and a son-in-law, Bill Simpson.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Glendolyn Bailey Stevens; four daughters, Lori Simpson, Echo; Lisa Bentis, Dothan; Lana Duncan, Slocomb; Lynn Walker (Charles), Dothan; a son, Larry Stevens (Darla), Denver, CO; eight grandchildren, Alvie Simpson, Christina Andrews (Lee), Brian Bentis (Kendra), Tyler Duncan, Emily Shehane (Mitchell), Jonathon Stevens (Charlene), Brandon Stevens and Nathan Stevens; and seven great-grandchildren.
